Jan is an artist and architect based in Melbourne. He is the director of MvS Architects, a creative-practice researcher and senior-lecturer at RMIT Architecture & Urban Design, the founder of+Concepts, designer of Lost Tablets, and a creative sector activist at Future Tense.
Making art about architecture, and vice versa, Jan is engaged in the governance and communities of both. And lives amongst a dense salon hang of works by family, heroes, and peers.

The Red Box
A collaboration by artist/architect duo Olivia Lennon and Jan van Schaik. Housed at l’Escaut artists residency in April 2024 for Art Brussels. The project is an iterative and experimental performance, conceived in reverse.

Named after missing ships and abandoned satelites, Lost Tablets is a series of works which explore the mysteries of human existence by exploiting a tension between a universally recognisable children’s toy and the grammar of architectural symbols.

Creative Ecologies
This national research project was instigated by Future Tense to understand what it takes to build thriving creative communities. The project was launched at Artlands 2018 and is developing an open access online tool for policymakers and practitioners.
